Louisvilles's Economic Stimulus Strategy
LESS spending, LESS taxes, LESS red tape, LESS government...more jobs.
Jobs creation, not just talk...
Public/Private partnerships with local business and U of L - We need to create a Research and Development business park in close proximity to U of L (i.e. the property just south of U of L next to Louisville International Airport or at the Shelby Campus in Hurstbourne). We would build the infrastructure to create a World-Class, cutting-edge, Business Park to attract existing, and startup companies to Louisville . We would utilize U of L's Internet fiber and extend it to the business park and provide low-cost, super-high speed Internet to these companies. We would provide special financing and/or Venture Capital for our Speed Scientific School, Medical School and other graduates that want to change the world with innovative ideas. Imagine the possibilities for our future as a city if we become a "Hot Bed" for innovation in Alternative Energy, Health Care (i.e. Hi-tech equipment and medicine to save lives), and Hi-tech devices that will make business and government more efficient. We can be the city that makes the world a "greener" place to live...lowering costs and minimizing our impact on our environment.
With a NEGATIVE 3.2% job growth over the last decade in the Louisville Metro Area, we need some serious innovation! I have a plan with a vision to move Louisville forward...
Just as an FYI...Neither Goverment, nor Politicians create private sector jobs! All Government can do is make an environment that promotes job growth, one that makes employers feel secure in hiring new employees to fill a need. One such way is for Government to build the appropriate infrastructure that will benefit all citizens.

Create Hi-tech infrastructure in Louisville |
| Hi-Tech Jobs |
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink...so you need to make the horse thirsty:
We need to make prospective employers thirsty for what Metro Louisville has to offer. As your Metro Mayor, together, we would embark on a bold new plan to start building infrastructure, with public-private partnerships for forward-thinking projects such as Ultra-High Speed Internet Connectivity (like Google Gigabit) with speeds up to 10 gigabits, 1,000 times faster than your cable modem, to interconnect our city with the world. With speeds like this, it will open up a whole new world for all of us. It would open up even more opportunities for competition to enter the market, not just for Internet, but for voice communications as well as Television, Movies, Music, Classrooms online, and more. We would have more options than just AT&T and Insight to choose from for those services. And the best part...it would pay for itself because Service Providers would lease the use of the lines from the city.
New startup and existing Hi-tech businesses would want to be in Louisville for the Super High Speed connection to the world. Cloud computing companies (they provide online storage and productivity software for businesses and individuals), a hot growth sector in Hi-tech, would want to be right here in Louisville. Hi-tech call centers to answer calls from all over the country would want to locate here in Louisville. Those companies could lower their costs and increase their quality of service to their customers...all they would need to do is locate in Louisville, KY!
We would not only build the infrastructure, but help train the skilled labor as well. I would work hard with educators to bring a curriculum to the High School level for more vocational training in technology so that we have a ready, willing and able Hi-tech work force for new employers.

The Motion Picture Industry...right here, in Louisville |
|
Jobs in the Film Industry
When a major motion picture is filmed in a city, it brings an estimated $200,000 per day in revenue to that city's economy... |
Wow! Major Motion Pictures filmed in Louisville:
Another industry that has already started and could grow if we do it right, is the Motion Picture industry. There is already State legislation setup for incentives for Major Motion Pictures, such as Secretariat that was just filmed, in part, in Louisville last year. We need to have our schools offer our students courses for training in the Motion Picture Industry. When a motion picture is filmed, there are thousands of support people needed to make it successful. If we had an already trained workforce in place, we would be able to lure more films to our city.
And if we have our Gigabit Internet built, the movie industry will also be able to distribute that movie via the Internet from right here in Louisville in just minutes.
Another potential for job growth, start filming TV shows here in Louisville. Imagine something like "CSI:Louisville" being filmed right here! Not only do we get the employment that comes with it, but the exposure our city would get from scenes of Louisville being shown every week on National TV. Not only that, but if we have a "built-in" Hi-tech infrastructure in place, like our Gigabit Internet, the show could be broadcast via the Internet each week, right from Louisville!
"If we build it, they will come..."
And one of the great things about this industry, it is CLEAN and GREEN!

The Healthcare Industry has had the most job growth in our city for the last 10 years... |
|
Jobs in Health Services
Health Services jobs have grown in Louisville by 23% since 2000, 15,275 jobs! Those jobs grew in 2009 alone by 1.7%, 1375 jobs...even in a deep recession... |
As your Metro Mayor, I would do whatever it takes to keep this sector going: With healthcare reform, nobody really knows what is going to happen with healthcare monetarily, but one thing is for sure...the need for healthcare is only going to increase. With the Baby Boomers coming of age, there will be a lot of people needing healthcare as they get older. We need to make sure that our Hospitals and Universities stay on the cutting edge of Health Sciences technology so that Louisville will continue to be a beacon of hope for people in need of the latest technology in healthcare.
We need to continue to encourage growth for our Downtown Medical Complex. One way we might do this is to move Veteran's Hospital Downtown to the Medical Complex area, building on the synergies and expertise of Norton's, Jewish, and U of L hospitals. I am aware that there are a lot of Veterans that don't want their hospital to move Downtown, but maybe we address their concerns and come up with a good compromise. Senator Mitch McConnell has already worked to secure Federal money to begin construction of a new Veteran's Medical Complex. Now we have to decide where to build it. That project alone will create many jobs in the Louisville area. With almost 11% unemployment in Louisville, I would say it is time to get it moving!
